Kate's Story

For over a decade, Kate has worked tirelessly to fight for her clients as a criminal defense lawyer. In this role, she was honored to advocate for clients at various stages of the criminal process, including being primary counsel at
all stages ranging from initial advisement, bond arguments, motions hearings, preliminary hearings, and trials that resulted in an acquittal of all substantial charges. She has gone to trial on cases that range from municipal court
violations to the most serious felonies that carry life sentences. Moreover, Kate has experience on post-conviction issues ranging from appeals, ineffective assistance of counsel claims, sex offender deregistration, and
assisting with reporting to professional boards such as nursing and medical boards.

Above all, Kate prides herself in providing candid, zealous, and compassionate representation to her clients based on listening carefully to the facts of their situation and individual goals.

Prior to attending law school, Kate served for two years with an AmeriCorps program in California that provided services to underserved communities. While doing this work she was repeatedly confronted with the intolerable
disparity in resources that exists for poor communities. Moreover, her living stipend placed her below the poverty level, thus providing her a glimpse of the challenges people living in poverty face every day. It was because of this
experience that she decided to pursue a legal career.

Following her first year of law school, Kate studied international criminal courts and human rights in The Hague and Brussels. She observed various international criminal tribunals; however, she also read many reports by
international organizations about the human rights violations that occur in American courts and prisons every day, and this further fueled her desire to work as a criminal defense attorney and thereby promote access to justice.
Upon returning to Colorado to graduate law school, Kate interned with and was then hired by the Colorado Public Defender’s Office, where she advocated for clients in court and researched a wide range of legal issues. Moreover, she found a place where people shared her firm belief that everyone is entitled to skilled and vigorous representation. She felt fortunate to observe the passion that her colleagues displayed in fighting to passionately defend their clients and has aspired to hold herself to the same standard ever since. In addition to working with the Public Defender’s Office for two summers and then as a Deputy Public Defender out of law school, Kate has also represented individuals adjudicated for crimes to deregister as sex offenders and assisted other juveniles in expunging their case. In this vein, she has been appointed as a guardian ad litem (GAL) to represent juvenile’s best interest in criminal cases.

Over the past eight years since leaving the Public Defender’s Office, Kate has gained experience as a private criminal defense lawyer where she has honed her litigation and mitigation practice throughout the state of Colorado. As a criminal defense lawyer who is licensed to practice in municipal, state and federal court, Kate has had many unique opportunities to work with exceptional teams and experts at various stages of litigation in a manner that prevented charges or resulted in dismissals prior to trial.
